Once more, the forum has proved its worth! I've seen those hinges many times but hadn't got a clue what they're called. Hard to imagine a life without t'internet! The comb joint jig seems to have been a success John. I saw a Solar at a radio rally recently, but unfortunately it was in a shocking state cosmentically - such a shame really - it looked untouched inside.

Alas these hinges on eBay are too big for this application. The smallest one is designed to fix to a 3/4in frame - exactly twice the thickness of mine.

Kevin Hoyland has very kindly sent me lots of photos of his two units so I've attached one that shows what the hinges look like (which most of you probably know already). the rear frame is 3/8in thick.

The hunt continues.

Hi David, yes indeed. There was a period of trial and error - and keeping things square when the general scale of the pieces is so small proved a bit of a challenge. However, after not too much wood being wasted, I got the hang of it. Thanks for the video - really helped.

Just a bit of an update on the replacement lid for the Solar. I may have to go with piano hinges to get the project finished and then replace them if at some point in the future I can find the correct slide apart hinges.

Thanks for going to the trouble to post yet another very interesting and informative youtube video John. You went to a lot of trouble dealing with the 'out of squareness' of the box to get the lid to mate up exactly to the box. It explains why boxes are invariably made in one piece and the lid cut off the completed box so that they exactly match. Just one degree out at the corners makes all the difference.

I liked the idea of getting a wide piece of sandpaper on which to sand the whole box to get it level. The only time I've seen sandpaper that wide is from surplus sanding belting, but I've never checked out its availability. I did once have a roll, but cut it up to make sanding sheets for a half-sheet power sander. On reflection, rather stupid!

I enjoyed watching your other youtube videos on casting resin components. 3-D printers within the reach of our shallow pockets can't come quick enough eh!

Hope the right type and size of hinges turn up from one source or another John.

There was a Solar for sale at the recent Golborne Swapmeet, but it was too far gone to consider except as a donor - all the front panel was illegible. What a shame such equipment is left to go to wrack and ruin in that way.

Good luck with the restoration. (I see the radio still at the far end of the bench awaiting completion too!).

The sticky back sandpaper I use comes in a roll about 2in wide - I just stuck a number of them in parallel on the bench.

Yes the Bajazzo is my shop radio now - gets used just about every day. It's by far the most sensitive of any of the radios I've done so far. I'll be on to making a B+ battery for it one of these days - another first for me.
