After my disaster with that Heathkit bridge I thought I'd try again - hopefully this will turn out better. It's all original inside though the hinged lid is missing so if the gadget works I'll have some woodwork to do.

I love the look of old kit like this - modern stuff generally looks boring by comparison (IMHO).

Hi Alan, yes some jig making will be in order. Not sure about the catch - alas the manual shows the device minus the lid so I don't know what to look for yet.

It looks very bonny John - I just love the look of old American test gear. A while back you posted info about and 'Eico' you'd acquired.

Test gear often seems to go for quite reasonable prices e-bay on the other side of the pond, but the cost of postage and risk of damage in transit does rather put the kibosh on such ventures.

(I didn't hear about your Heathkit bridge 'disaster').

My mistake David - it was the Eico capacitance bridge that was the disaster. Memory is failing with age! I've put it away in a box and may drag it out again one day and do a complete re-build.

Yes I agree re the hassles with eBay. I tend to avoid it unless I see something really interesting and hopefully small enough that damage is less likely in shipping. For stuff like components and small gadgets it's still OK.

I can't find it either John - the post may go back to 'GF1' when 'absent friends' caused the forum to 'crash and burn' before it was resurrected and put back on a sound footing. If so, even if the post is tucked away somewhere on the forum, the pics would have been lost from the post in any event. I'll post some pics and an explanation under the woodwork section of the forum.

The jig is simple to make from scrap offcuts, and a cheapo DIY router is fine - anything else for such a lightly loaded task is overkill. I keep a cheapo router fixed to the jig all the time, with a 6mm (1/4") straight shanked bit in it ready for use. To cut each slot takes just a few seconds. (In use, the jig is held in a woodturning vice). It would be fine for making a new top for your cabinet.

Here's an update on the Solar CBB restore. It seems to be working well so next task is to build a replacement lid for it.
