Maybe it's my old ears, but I've got a TR82/97, and although I don't use it, it sounds quite respectable to me on all bands. But then my Pure Evoke DAB radio sounds fine to me too, despite many people denigrating DAB.

As you are aware David, I've got the full 15 model series as regards the MB60/TR82/VTR103 portables, and the TR82/97 isn't a patch on any of them. But then again it was never mean't to be, it is a modern reproduction copy after all.

Until I became aware of your extensive collection and read your in depth article in the BVWS Bulletin I'd no idea that the series was so extensive. I'd simplistically only been aware of the TR82C - I'd never known that it was preceded by a valve version. It must have been quite a task to gather together such a comprehensive collection, and to research the range in such detail Robert.

Thanks David, surprisingly the complete collection came together in about 3 or 4 years. At the time I was searching for the different models it seemed quite a long time, but looking back now it was very quick.

I still keep a look out for the rarer models in the series on eBay and none have appeared since about the end of 2008. So I was very lucky really!

Of the whole series, the ETR2 must be the oddest, and perhaps rarest of all. The use of the one valve to ensure that the radio operated reliably at higher frequencies was technically well reasoned, and there are other hybrid sets of the era - I have a small HMV portable which has a transistorised audio stage but valve frequency changer and IF stage. But I guess that the ETR2 found a limited market, and I think the HMV one is also uncommon, if not rare. (The model number escapes me and I'm not at home just now to check. The set is very compact inside!).

The sets in your collection look in good shape Robert, with not a misty dial in sight.
