Crystal mics are high output. Hence the default with late 1950s and early 1960s tape machines. Like crystal cartridges, the early models "went off". I think mics with tape machines changed over to 200 Ohm dynamic when the transistor portable machines came out (small reels for a few years till compact cassette took over).
I think pop groups need very insensitive robust damped moving coil (dynamic) mics as they seem inclined to try and swallow them while screaming, or signing very loud anyway. Which also boosts the bass.
Ribbon mics can be very hi fi but don't like blown in or shouted at up close. In Beeb we were told to scratch, never blow, to test a mic.
