I've taken some pics of the unit including the back of the display unit - I have not touched anything at inside but there do seem to be some marks?

The backlight is probably the a/k pads on the display. What's the voltage across those and is there any sign of a dry joint there...

It looks like an easy module to replace if you can get the spare anyway...

...and if the LCD is working, as ir may well be judging by the "torch test" you did, you can get replacement LCD backlight strips on eBay and elsewhere...

EDIT: Looking at the image of the display board by magnifying it (the image is not great resolution) it looks like someone has already attempted to remove the backlight and the joints look pretty dry/no solder?

Which part of the display is the lcd backlight strip? The bottom panel is over the switches and the top section is the actual display. Where do I need to measure the voltage - I'm really lost on this one.

Look at the panel with the two black blobs... There's "A" and "K" on the PCB in white lettering. Can you send a close-up photo of that area and measure the voltage between the A & K...

The voltage across A and K is 2.8v

Definitely a voltage for an LED or strip.
The LED shouldn't overheat at that voltage but it may have failed and still pulling current (Unlikely though).
Does the board get warm if you leave it on?

That's good. A photo of that area would be good as it looked from the previous photo that the soldering had been messed with...
