Earthing yourself while you sleep

I think we did discuss them before. Obviously complete excrement of male cow.

I commented on another thread that I get a slight tingle from my earthed bedside light when the electric blanket is on. Since this is due to capacitative coupling an earthed electrostatic shield over the electric blanket would solve it.

Was this popular when nylon sheets were common?

I remember when I was young it was popular to fit earthing strips to cars to prevent travel sickness, I don't know how well it worked, but for a few years they seemed to be a common accessory on Mk3 Ford Escorts.

The late and much missed Gerry Wells had a term for those "earthing" straps you used to see on cars. It was very politically incorrect and I cetainly can't say it here.

A boy at my boarding school in the '60s  connected a wire to his steel bed frame, to act as an aerial, so he could listen to the short waves on his Sony transistor after 'lights out'' in the dormitory. An illegal act.

It was discovered by Matron and she queried it.  The boy claimed the wire was to earth himself in case of being struck by lightning... and she accepted it!

I'm still in touch with this 'boy' today. He's my oldest friend.

I did exactly that back in the early '70s with my iron-framed bed in a dormitory at my boarding school in SE London... it was for a small radio I had made - bits from HL Smiths in Edgware Road.

If you were really close to CP your bed frame could have been the right sort of size to resonate at Channel 1.

There was an old tale once doing the rounds that someone was using something like bed frames in his loft to draw free energy out of a local TV transmitter. The story was that this was noticed at the transmitter... affected the "impedance of free space" or somesuch.

Probably just a tale and nonsense ?

We were a mile or so away in Dulwich. In my lower sixth I built a slow-scan ground station for weather satellite imagery with the assistance of a mentor from the British Astronomical Association & Royal Astronomical Society. There was an enormous issue with signal swamping from CP - my aerials were on the roof of the DT block which was made from reinforced concrete and was a pretty good aerial in its own right.

The BBC invited me and my DT supervisor (who helped me weld up the aerials) up to the transmitter and we got a guided tour round the underground transmitter rooms etc. They were very helpful too with the interference issue.
