NOS EF9 valve?

[Radio Fixer]

Bought this from: http://markhindes.easywebstore.co.uk/aboutus.aspx

Would you be happy that this is New Old Stock?  It maybe old stock but cant be described as New.

Pins are corroded, metalising has minimal connection.  Box isnt the one on the site picture but I guess that doesnt matter.  Obviously stored somewhere damp.

So far a request for a replacement or refund has been ignored.  Its not just about the money but the wasted time.  Can take it up with PayPal of course.

NOS is obviously subject to interpretation. If it's never been used then it can reasonably be described as NOS regardless of whether it looks manky. NOS covers a wide range from "just left the factory" to nasty and mangy but technically new. Perhaps that's too wide a range.

If it doesn't work then it's faulty which is means you should get your money back. Not communicating with the customer about problems is bad service and a reason to avoid the supplier.

If it tests as having emission in the range of maker's spec, then likely NOS.
Released in 1938 and likely production ended by early 1940s. Any electronic part that's over 75 years old is going to look cosmetically poor unless stored in an archive system.

If it works reasonably you've no grounds to complain as its more likely 80 years old than 75 or less. I'd expect an EF39 to be a bit cosmetically better, but if the emission is OK, then I'd not care.

Do run the filament for 10 to 20 minutes before adding HT and you can test at 6V DC, g1 -3V to -9V (PP3 and a 1M pot), g3 = 0V and anode + g2 at 80V to 90V if you have no valve tester. If Ia is better than 50% of rating in data then I'd call it OK.

Hi.
I recently sold over a thousand valves and being fair many were NOS but have suffered ageing. All were tested prior to sale and any duds were binned.
NOS means exactly what it says, the OS part has to be taken literally as its Old Stock, valves can be damp stored be in environments of heat and frost so cosmetically they can indeed look poor. So long as it is to spec I doubt you can complain.
Just ask the car collectors the condition of spare parts that are NOS some are covered in rust but otherwise are perfect.

Pity you didn't advertise for an EF9 a few months ago as I had three that were like new!!!

[Radio Fixer]

Hear what you say guys and thanks.  But surely it should match the advertised picture on the site?  The box is nothing like the one shown and the valve base looks far better than this one.

I doubt I could test it without cleaning the pins and then it couldnt be returned.

Now see the picture of another advertised NOS valve: it was exactly like the picture.

If the valve was not the one in the picture then you have a claim. That's the way to proceed with PayPal, just make sure you have a photo from the listing and take plenty of the valve you received.

[Mike Watterson]

But surely it should match the advertised picture on the site?

It should, unless there is a disclaimer that the image is generic and not the actual part. If there is no disclaimer then the photo is part of the description and you are entitled to refund under "not as described".
A grey area is if there are more than one for sale and only one selected part is photographed.

[Radio Fixer]

Dont see any disclaimer and he did have two so maybe I got the poor one.
Yeah! its all a pain and more about the time wasted to pursue it rather than the money.

But he wont get any more business from me.

[Mike Watterson]

Well, test it.

[Murphyv310]

Hi.
You wont need to clean the pins for a test, I'd be inclined to test it in the radio and see if it works.
