Identification requested

Can anyone identify this radio please?
Initially, I thought it was the battery version of the Civilian Wartime Receiver, but on obtaining the Trader sheet for that set, find that it is not!
Four valve battery superhet.   Valve line up Frequency changer TP25.   IF Amplifier  VP23.    Detector/AGC,1st AF HL23DD, Output Pen25.
Chassis 11 inches by 5 inches and 2.5 inches high.
Aerial and oscillator coils missing.    Wiring obviously altered, and quite a lot missing.
I gave £16 for this (Aaargh)!      Mission impossible?   Maybe, maybe not!

Hi Bob,
I don't see any sign of a wavechange switch... so I assume it's single band ?
TBH, I don't know of any commercially made set with that valve line-up that only had one waveband other than the wartime civilian receiver  - so I can see why you thought that's what is was.
A bit of a conundrum and certainly quite a project you've got there.

It does appear to be commercially produced because the valveholders are riveted in. In the Civilian Wartime Receiver, the valves are not all in a row, V3 and V4 are further in the chassis. But maybe they had more than one design of the wartime receiver and this version did not take-off.

Can anyone identify this radio please?

My best guess is a ham stripped the chassis and used it to build a receiver (probably ham band). Some of 'The Radio Board' members have been known to do projects such as I'm talking about. If you have the pin outs it would not be to difficult to produce a schematic. It could be an interesting project. The big unknown is whether or not it ever worked. When trouble shooting we like to go with the idea that the circuit worked at one time and find what changed. When debugging we have to keep the idea in mind that we could find 'design flaws'.

If it was in my shop I'd check the tubes and if they are good start working from the speaker towards the antennas. If the AF works shoot a signal thru the IF etc.

Looks like it could be a fun project.

Is that a 100uH inductor from mixer g1 to chassis?

Yes, it is a 100uH inductor. When I first purchased it several years ago, the coils were damaged beyond repair, so I took them out. I made temporary new coils from RF chokes and did get the set to work very well. Then I lost interest in it and it has been in the attic for years. Even if the chassis had been used for something else, there is only a single hole for the volume control/on-off switch on the front, suggesting it never had a wavechange switch. I really don't know. The only alteration that I made to the wiring was to fit dropping resistors in the filaments so I could use a 3 Volt LT supply. I now have a 2 Volt re-chargeable sealed lead acid, so I can take them out. I don't suppose it will take much effort to rebuild it, but I just wondered what it was. Someone, apart from me, had already had a go at it before I got it! The person I got it from did not know anything about it, although he is a dealer in vimtage radio parts, equipment and books etc. Someone had apparently drilled a hole through the oscillator coil, no doubt be accident, and the aerial coil was broken as well! I tend to only buy old radios if they are in a dreadful condition!

I see what you mean about the IF transformer cut-outs. I hadn't noticed that before, one round, the other four individual holes. Quite a few new components have been added, so it is difficult to say what its origins were, but it did work, and worked quite well. I added the output transformer and the jack socket, also the modern pot. Looking at it more closely, the chassis does have an appearnce of homemade, and that cut-out on the front left of the chassis looks like it has been cut with a hacksaw before the sides were folded down. I am now inclined to agree that it is "homebrew."
