Right click on the (usually) blue header t the top of the DOS box. Select "properties". Select the "font" tab and change it to 10x18. That should make things clearer.

I've used this speed checker several times recently. A minute or two ago the maximum download speed was 2.1Mbps, and max. upload speed 2.5Mbps

Yes, there will be varying results with fibre-to-the-cabinet services. And with a speed test like that one, the performance of the whole chain is being tested, so your computer - for example - could bring the speed down if it's not working properly.

For what it's worth, I get 75Mb/s (77 burst) download, 18.4Mb/s (19.1 burst) from that test. If I ran it again, I'd expect to get different numbers.

My sync speeds are currently 79.2Mb/s download, 20Mb/s upload. Usually the download speed sits at the full 80Mb/s, but slight variations are to be expected. I'm about 200 metres from the green cabinet as the crow flies - no idea of the actual route the cable takes once it reaches the pole in the neighbours garden. My router draws pretty pictures of the frequency response of the cable between me and the green cabinet, and I can see a dip in the 1.2MHz region, implying that the cable is not perfect in some regard. Often this is caused by a repair in the pre-DSL days, which introduces reflections. It's a real shame that I didn't have this router back in the day when I tripled my ADSL speed by making two changes to my wiring - it would have been really interesting to see the effect of my wiring problems on the frequency response.

Anyway, the sync speed is the low-level data rate negotiated between my router and the DSLAM in the green box. So the overall throughput, as measured by an internet speed test, will never be as high as that.

Speeds in the 2Mb/s region might well seem OK, but that's a long way away from 30Mb/s. If I was only getting 1/15th of what I was paying for, I'd want to know why.

Another check, a minute ago shows Max. download speed at 2.2Mbps, and a similar speed for uploads. I've tried switching off the router, disconnecting & re-connecting both the ethernet and phone line cables, changing the DSL filter, even switching off my Freeview box (the only other thing connected in any way to the internet. I haven't yet tried connecting directly to the master socket, because, as I explained earlier, due to the layout of my room, locating the router to where it's phone cable will reach the master socket, and it's ethernet cable reach the PC is difficult. What's still puzzling me is that my set-up has been essentially the same for several years, with both the present tower and the old XP one, yet it's only recently that the download speeds have been this slow. Despite this, I can still do all I want, so I'm inclined not to worry too much about it. I rarely download TV shows or movies, sometimes listen to the radio via the I-player, but other than that, the computer is used for surfing the net, sending & receiving e-mails, starting & replying to threads on this and other forums, all of which work quite well.

Is your master socket an NTE5 type?

I would go to a computer shop and buy a longer CAT5 cable.
That would make it a lot more reliable.
