Content of some sites sometime slow to load-why?

In particular this applies to my Phone Co-op email account, and to my Yahoo.co.UK account.  Several times in the last few days, most recently a couple of minutes ago, the Yahoo account opens, but the content of two email messages, both from known, genuine sources, will not load, whist my Phone Co-op email account won't open at all.  Besides these problems, I sometimes get a message 'Firefox seems slow to load-learn how to speed it up', which I usually ignore, because, IIRC, what is requires is to clear the cache -i.e. remove all my usual sites from a drop-down list, which I'm reluctant to do.  Anyway, this doesn't explain why (a) most of the time the two sites load & display content correctly, and (b) why none of the other sites I use suffer from this problem.  Anyone know a solution to the above without clearing all my stored items.

A few questions which need to be answered before we can help.

What sort of computer are you using?
Are you connecting via wired ethernet or wifi?
What speed of internet connection do you have? For this there are 2 sets of answers. The sync speeds and the download/upload speeds. The latter, always lower than the former, can be tested here: https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest

For example my sync speeds are 79.997Mb/s down, 19.999Mb/s up. In other words an 80/20 FTTC service on a short enough length of cable to sync at full speed. The speed tester is giving 73.2 and 19.1 which is also excellent. Curiously I thought I was being throttled to 55/10 for historic reasons to do with being on Plusnet's obsolete 40/20 service. Looks like they've now forgotten to do the throttling.

I'm using the latest version of Firefox, which is updated as & when required. OS is Windows 10, again frequently updated. Having just carried out, for the first time in ages a Broadband speed check, the results are Upload 0.7Mbps, Download 1.7 -2Mbps. This latter seems a bit slow, but it's the speed shown by the test in the link you provided, Jeffrey. My internet connection is via an Ethernet cable, b.t.w. Before replying to your's and Mike's posts, I'd visited my Phone Co-op webmail and Yahoo.UK sites. These are/were working normally again, and I was able to open and read emails sent to both sites as normal.

By modern standards you've got a slow connection so some sites will be slow at times.

As Jeffrey says, those speeds are very low.

Are you out in the sticks somewhere, miles from the nearest exchange? Is you feed overhead or underground?

It might be useful to compare performance and speeds with your neighbours. That way you could see if it is only your connection that is getting these low speeds. The fact that you've only been having problems recently could well point to a fault.

If your feed is overhead, the high winds we've had recently - I assume you have had them too - could have caused a problem.

I'm in Chipping Norton. My home is about a mile from the exchange, and the connection is via an underground line, so the recent strong winds shouldn't have affected /caused these low speeds.

I too have noticed this and I often think it is due to the amount of excess baggage that comes with a lot of pages. rather than lean html there is much fancy stuff often from other sites. Graphics are often overly large these days compared with a few years ago.

My Firefox browser has a small box in the bottom left hand corner that reports what is is loading or what Firefox is waiting for. Makes for interesting reading to see what "crap/spyware/baggage" is arriving.

I've just re-run the speed check, and the maximum download speed is still only 2Mbps. Haven't yet spoken to neighbours about this, and only have one Tower Computer (no smartphone or other internet-capable device), so can't check if other device(s) d/l speeds are higher. I guess it could be a fault at Talk Talk's 'end' or even a faulty router.

Try switching off the Router for 30 seconds and once enabled another speed test. Has Openreach been working in the area? Have you looked on Talk Talks page that lists problems? Sadly talk talk customer service is dismal, best to do it online and get them to do a speed test and do any upgrades.
