Has anybody got any idea what the IR port is for on this tester?
I can't find anything in the description of the item and was wondering if it is a TV remote test feature or something like that.

Read the "Features" section: 
"It can also be used to detect infrared wave forms.
After detection, align the infrared remote control with the "IR" light, then press the button in the remote control, if the detector successfully decode it, it will display the data code and infrared wave form."

I just dived into the spec sheet to see if it will do all the components I want to test before ordering one. So the TV remote test is an extra feature beyond the call of duty.
Unlike many that are supplied as a bare board this one is built in a case.

If it draws the waveform on the screen as promised, it actually looks like quite a useful facility. A full report is expected, please

I remember reverse-engineering IR protocols using nothing but an analogue 'scope in a very dark room with nothing more than the persistence of vision and the decay time of the phosphor to help. That was nearly 20 years ago, back when the internet was of limited use for that sort of thing. Today, it's all out there, and we have Rigols to capture the waveform with ease. Too easy!

I will certainly do a review when it arrives and also one for the digital microscope I ordered at the same time.
There were quite a few reviews of these testers on VRAT.
Many of them were just the board and you had to buy the case as an extra.

It produces two numbers from a remote. One is always the same and the other is different for each key pressed.
I now need to find a remote that needs reverse engineering.
It will take several days to do a review as I have got massively distracted having also bought a digital microscope while I was at it

Philips RC5 is the one I know fairly well. Each command contains a device address, then the command. I'm sure Sony/NEC/etc will be similar. It's a shame it doesn't suggest which scheme it's decoding. Looks pretty nice though...

That was just a no name DVD player remote I tried quickly.
I will start a new thread for a full review and try a few more remotes too.
I also have a valve LCR bridge to restore so I will in the long run have something to compare it with later.
