I still do the odd installation and any I've done recently don't tune the analogue systems. There maybe some that do Mike but you'd need to do some research. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Would an HDMI extender provide an answer? Something like this:

It would need an HDMI splitter as the Virgin box only has the one HDMI output and we use that for our TV downstairs. It would also need a new cat 6 cable run in. I am surprised it needs 2 power adaptors, surely you can run POE on cat 6. Mike

If you're willing to run in a cat 6 cable, then you could run AV signals direct from the scart socket via it (using balans).
Obviously, if you're willing to run 1, run at least 2 ![]() I've no experience of HDMI splitters. How does the HDCP work with multiple destination devices? What about different destination devices with different capabilities - presumably both/all devices have to work to the best capabilities of the least capable device? Genuine PoE is quite complex, and adds a fair bit to the cost of a product. There are non-standard ways to do it - my WAP does that, and very useful it is too. But that device is only 100Mb/s, so only needs 2 of the 4 pairs, leaving the others for simple DC. But as there's every chance this device uses all 4 pairs for signals, it would need to do something more clever to get the power down there as well (it's not all that more complex, but it's still effort and cost). The other factor is isolation - if you run power down the lead, you'd need an isolating DC-DC converter at one end to maintain galvonic isolation - which this device ought to provide - but that obviously adds to the cost again...

Does the cost of a second Virgin box rule it out?
Virgin would probably insist on replacing the coax to it though, unless, possibly, you could convince them that your existing cable is suitable - not only for screening purposes but suitable for the type of crimp F connectors they would have to fit on both ends. If it is CT100 or a variant - PF100, WF100, etc. - it should be suitable, if you can convince them! RG6 is unlikely to be acceptable although it is widely used and almost certainly what VM still use. The reason for that is that CT100 is a cable specification whereas RG6 is a cable type. A cable manufacturer's catalogue may contain several pages of variants of RG6, the main differences, as far as we are concerned here, is varying degrees of screening. The RG6 widely available is popular with the cowboy aerial riggers because it is very much cheaper that CT100. You can draw your own conclusions about the effectiveness of the screening ... |
