Thanks Sam. Had a bit of a brainwave this morning. As there is no field coil and any form of regulation is going to be crude, IE some form of shunt or zener, why not disconnect the regulator when not needed? See dia att. I thought about using the headlight as a sense resistor and putting another sense R in series with the battery. Voltage from these goes to a control, EG opamp or comparator that controls a switch that cuts either the rectifiers earth or the DC + to the battery.
If the weather is good today i'll take a few readings and have a play. Andy.

I have thought about this and if it were me I would knock up a series chopper using the SMPSU core from an old CRT TV or computer and one of the many controller chip.

That might be a bit beyond me, allthough I might have the bits in the shed.
I measured the current on my knocked up rectifier at 7A ! Which seems a bit much. also found one winding down on voltage Op. This bike is turning into a bit of a money pit, might be better to save £'s up rather than get new bits, time to get a new one unfortunately. I get really attached to bikes and old vans. Over on UKVRR someone said that Lucas used SCR's as the bottom 3 diodes as regulation see att. Working out component values again will be tricky. So I've bought a scrap rec/reg off ebay. Should keep me going for a few more miles. Thanks again for all your help and ideas, Andy. |
