PC crashes

I use USB sticks for daily incremental backups. Weekly backup is on another 1TB HDD using Aomei Backupper either to clone the D: drive or back up all its contents. I plan to clone the C: drive occasionally. I have already proven that I can boor from a cloned C: drive. It was an ordinary spinning rust drive and took about 4x longer to boot than the SSD.

I've unplugged the USB hub for now. I'll do the incrementals using one of the ports on the front of the PC. My USB sticks are all configured to appear as the G: drive.

I've found Speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php useful for monitoring fan function and chip temeratures.

It's got into a regular pattern now. Crashes within 5 minutes of switching on, then fine for rest of day. I ought to try a deliberate shut odown and switch off, just to see if it crashes the same way. As an aside I've no USB devices plugged in and turned on, drives V and W aren't there. Lookint at errors and critical events in the Event Viewer:

Just these 2 errors before the crash...
13/03/2017 06:29:54: Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. The event log error is a result of a problem with Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Please see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help...er-2008-r2

The other error is related to Microsoft Security Essentials, which you don't need as you are using another AV.

The following should cure that issue:

1. Either rename the file EppOobe.etl (in C > ProgramData > Microsoft > Microsoft Security Client > Support) as EppOobe.etl.old, or delete it, and reboot.
   
2. Check the Support folder. If there was no other problem, Windows would have created a new EppOobe.etl file.
   
3. Delete the file that had been renamed 'old'.

I did a shut down and sturtup, exactly as I would do in the morning. System crashed after a few seconds.

That should eliminate anything caused by a cold mobo or PSU.

I've deleted EppOobe.etl and will reboot soon. Presumably this is nothing to do with my real problem.

I've rebooted (including switch off at mains) and so far so good. EppOobe.etl with zero length and apparently no contents.

I will be changing AV software again soon. I started with MSE, downloaded Malwarebytes but the free trial is about to expire. The choice is likely between Avast free version (which I've used for years) and QIHOO 360 which seems to get good reviews: http://www.trustedreviews.com/best-free-...-up_Page-6

I use AVG Internet Security (the paid-for version), but AVG Free is very good on its own: http://www.avg.com/ww-en/homepage - QIHOO has inbuilt advertising, AVG Free does not.

AVG has certainly moved on since when I last used it. I dropped it in favour of Avast when it was looking a bit creaky. Now it looks like hte choice of free AV is between AVG and Bitdefender: http://me.pcmag.com/bitdefender-antiviru...ition-2017
