Installing a PC Line PCL3000 Scanner

Having set up my HP Compaq 6200 Computer during the past week, I've found that my PCL3000 scanner, a 'Musteq' Clone, cannot be installed as no drivers are recognized for this product.  Googling produced the info. that this model is a rebadged Musteq, and provided a link to driver program.  However this was flagged up as potentially untrustworthy, so I didn't download/install the program concerned.  Can anyone point me in the direction of a trustworthy driver program, please.  The PCL3000 worked with XP, so should itself be OK.  As yet I havent installed a CD/DVD drive in the 6200, so cannot use an installation disc.

The link at the bottom of the page - which is direct to the Mustek website - looks fine to me: ftp://ftp3.mustek.com.tw/pub/new/driver/...1248%20UB/

Keep clicking until you get to "web.exe" as a download, then give that a go. I can't try it personally as I don't have that scanner, and this machine is running Linux.

If in doubt, create a system restore point before installing the driver...

The first link is exactly what i found, Mark. At the bottom of that article is the link which was flagged up as unsafe (certificate invalid) Your second link only produces 'server not found!'

I could click through as far as web.exe without getting a certificate problem. The direct link doesn't work.

There may be a spate of certificate problems at the moment, some real, some spurious. For example "The Register" http://www.theregister.co.uk/ makes Avast block all the images because of a claimed non-valid certificate. Most of us (including me) have no idea of what certificates are really about.

Have to say I don't like the look of a file called web.exe Smells of malware though I could easily be wrong.

But, as said, it's just the link from the article. Which works perfectly for me.

If you're getting certification errors when you follow that link - a link that works for me from both home and work machines - then that's a problem with your machine that you need to investigate. The only time I've run into certification problems was when my real-time clock was wildly wrong after a CMOS battery change. It could be a problem with windows updates, perhaps?

The fact it comes directly from the manufacturer's FTP site is fairly reassuring... Beyond that, I have no time to investigate further - I have a busy day today

The solution is to surround it with URL tags:

Normally it's OK to omit the tags, and the thread display code will parse URLs by surrounding them with HTML "a" tags. But that parsing routine is clearly not working correctly for un-tagged URLs that are FTP rather than HTTP.

When the post is made or previewed, it will get changed to this:

Note the URL= in the opening URL tag. That's what matters. The bit between the square brackets is the displayed text, and can be changed to anything you like:

The "URL" can be upper or lower case - I used upper case here for clarity...

The lesson is that while the forum software does various clever things for our convenience it's sometimes too clever for its own good.
