Is anyone going for the new windows 10 free upgrade?

Any thoughts on what the free angle is?

I'm still thinking about it. I have accepted the invite on one of my computers, so at some point, it will download itself and give me the option to install it. You have 12 months to install it, I believe.

Someone on Facebook shared a lengthy post this morning where many privacy issues were raises. I've not read through the T&Cs yet to double-check the claims, but it wouldn't be surprising if easier access to certain types of our data was the price to pay. If so, what matters is whether you can opt out of allowing certain types of access, and what functionality you'd lose for doing so. Of course, Microsoft are far from the only big company who are interested in us

Beyond that, I'm interested in learning more - I've just been too busy to look into it myself. Certainly, the reviews seem to be very positive.

I don't think they give them to people who use Ubuntu

Not sure I have any right to comment as my main PCs use XP and this laptop I'm writing on uses Vista. For even mentioning that or W8 or W10 i suppose we should be contributing to the swear box

Mu understanding of the reason that Microsoft have developed W10 is so that it's compatible across all platforms - PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones. It's been said that when smartphones started to take off, MS didn't see the likes of Apple as a threat because after all - "who would want to use a device on internet that didn't have a proper keyboard?"  (The pundits said something similar about the Sony Walkman - huh - a tape recorder that doesn't record, but only plays?"). Well that question has been well and truly answered and MS are rather late on parade if they want to try to attain a dominant presence in the smartphone/tablet market.

I have an I-pad and a desktop PC and don't have a smartphone.

I'm happy with the Apple OS on the I-pad, so W10 would only be of interest to me for use on the PC, and I'm not sure what functionality it has which would be an improvement on W7, which I've been quite content with.

I guess that the 'early adopters' who get a frisson from trying out new operating systems and other software will be getting quite excited about giving it a spin, in only out of curiosity - the sort of people who - if they see a sign saying 'Wet Paint' - just can't resist the temptation to see if it really is wet, or has it dried?  No doubt too, sundry anarchic misfits around the globe will be working round the clock, seeking out vulnerabilities to try to mount 'cyber attacks' so as to rain in Microsoft's parade.   As with previous MS operating systems, back to MS DOS, Wi 3.1, 95/98/2000 /XP/Vista etc, at some point well all have to move on or be left behind with an aging unsupported OS.  Meanwhile, until I get an answer to the 'what's in it for me?' question, I think I'll sit this one out.

I think what would induce me to install it, after the inevitable teething problems have been resolved, is if it boots up much quicker than W7.

If I open my I-pad it wakes up right away and if I tap on an app, there it is. If W10 would make my PC do likewise, then yes, it would be an attractive proposition - especially as it's 'summat for nowt'.

(As an aside, I can't say that I'm very keen on MS's trend towards programs that can't be bought but can only be had for a renewable annual fee - 'Office 365' etc).

Well I have been trying most of today to install win 10 so far without success all I get is a screen saying working on it .

Recently I inadvertantly installed Ubuntu with it's Unity desktop.  Same thing.  Make your PC look like it's a smart phone.  I don't want my PC to look like a smart phone.  I want it to be a PC with keyboard, scanner, printer etc.  Unity lasted about half an hour before I obliterated it and replaced it with KDE. 

Why anyone would want to rent some cloud application with NSA access when I can have OpenOffice free on my hard disk beats me completely.

I'm biding my time on this - I'd be interested to find out what problems others have with it - but don't forget that it is only free  for 12 months - after that, you pay!

One thing that concerns me is incidental costs.

My Toshiba Laptop runs W7 and is quite happy with all our hardware, yet Helen has a near identical machine about a year younger that came with W8 and whilst our Canon Lide 60 scanner works fine with my machine, there isn't a driver for W8. For the moment, Helen can use my machine to scan anything and transfer the files to her PC but if I install W10, presumably I'll have to scrap a perfectly good scanner and buy a new one! This does not make W10 'free'  in my opinion ...

It would probably be a good idea to trash my machine and reinstall W7 to get rid of all the accumulated crud  and consider a dual boot option with W10.

The question is, how do I implement the dual boot option? Any advice, please?

That's not what I thought - its free for good otherwise I want the option of 8.1 back if they asked for money

The official line at the moment is:

Once installed on your machine, it's yours - you'll never have to pay.

But you only have 12 months to take up the offer. After that, you'll have to buy it if you want it.
