It solder tag appears too small for the terminal bolt but i shall indeed look again. I did think L1 (excuse my ignorance - what is it) and yes, its next to the din socket.

Do you mean R1? Yes, I wondered about that as well.
From the photograph, I couldn't make up my mind as to what the component actually was. I'm leaning towards it being one of those "edgewound" air-cored inductors, by virtue of where the leads leave the body. That's why I asked if it was hollow.
The 2nd picture in the first post is definitely our best clue.

I think it could be L1 but why it has a ring on it beats me. The top end seems to be on one of the FM aerial sockets.
Is there anything on the back that it could have connected to?
I am pretty sure it should go in the second terminal of the link by the DIN socket. The third position has no connection and the link will then be in the little dimple on the edge of the insulated panel.
It looks like L1 to me.
I was thinking of the coil having been undone by mistake while removing the back.
The ring tag is at the correct angle for it to have come off a terminal at the rear of the insulated panel.
The aerial link is in the left position to ground via R1 if it physically matches the diagram.
The middle position will then be the coil and the right position no connection so it is then parked in the dimple at the edge.
I have grabbed snippets of the diagram and photo to show what I mean.
Ahh....I see what you mean and that appears very logical and I shall give at try. I've noted that the resistor. R1, is not 1k but appears to be 860R (I suppose its not that far out to 1k).
