HV PSU

I was wandering around the 'Net, looking for HV PSU circuits, designs and completed assemblies, when I came upon this item on e-bay:
item 151327237955.

And I gulped! When it says 'high voltage', it ain't kidding! A one second 'mishap' - and it's all over. You wouldn't even have time to say "Ouch!"

50 mA would be OK but at those voltages. I would imagine it to be current limited and not put out 50 mA at or above 100 kV as that's 500W. It could I suppose, someone might know.

Limited number of buyers but in the US who knows ... Might liven up a 'pot ' party.

Hi Al, the Farnell HV PSU (300v @100mA I think) is valve based and is often seen for sale. The circuit is available on one of the Forums.

It is quite easy to build and has variable volts and current as well as constant volts output.

I looked at the cct. of the E350. Bit 'over-the-top' on design, isn't it? Looks unnecessarily complicated to me.

For many years I've used either a Heathkit IP-17 (1968, 0-400VDC @ 0-100mA; 0-100VDC @ 1 mA; 6,3VAC 4A or 12.6VAC 2A, 10mV RMS ripple max) or the slightly later IP-2717a (1975, 0-400VDC @ 0-125mA; 0-100VDC @ 1 mA; 6.3VAC 4A or 12.6VAC 2A, 10mV RMS ripple max) for my tube PSUs whilst testing - nice little bits of kit.

The schematics are widely available (I've included them below, together with full manuals). If you get one, they'll need re-capping and a bit of TLC, but they are solid performers...

Graham Marsh, one of the nixie group and a guy who does a lot of interesting stuff has written up his restoration of one of these PSUs at:

PIcked up a E350 a few years back from a car boot replaced a EL34 and Bobs your Uncle

I believe 2 versions were available a 100ma & 200ma - these are hybrid PSU's using transistor / diode and valve

The Heathkit IP-17 is remarkably similar in design.... Both the IP-17 and SP-2717a schematics above are also easily homebuilt...

Look out for a Solartron SRS 153S. Fantastic build quality, massive Xformers and oil filled caps. Mine was missing a handle but nothing else to do just use. 3.15 - 0 - 3.15 for heaters and HT to 600V (not that I have ever gone that high) @ 150 mA.
