From what I have read the Mallory TR233R was a zinc mercury battery, it in itself containing three RM3R 1.4 volt cells, there's a readable page on the different types on Google books.

When you said 4.2 volts it made me think of the flat ones with the 3 cells side by side.
I have got a radio that takes two of those and they are not stocked locally so I used two packs of three AA cells.

Don't think so Colin, unless AAA means 3 Cells. As far as I can tell the Battery should be around 4 Volts.

I think you are right Alan ..... unfortunately the old boy passed away in early 1983, so I can't ask him! Your ebay link seems a good substitute.

Splendid! Thanks everyone, I'll copy the Information just in case I have to go in for construction again.
Just one thing, the Listed Battery is TM233R NOT TR233R, which I'm assuming is simply a Rechargable version.

The Thick Plottens!

I've now had a chance to look at the Manual properly and, despite the fact that the Plate on the Unit says VM/79/1 and the Manual says Issue 1 (Handwritten) they're not the same. The Manual is all about a Battery Version whereas mine has a Mains PSU built in - see Picture above. So, that may well explain the difference in the Battery Number. There's also an extra FP Switch on mine marked 'Charger ON'.

So, I'd better see if I can make any sense of the wiring around the PSU and Switches.
