We have the same tow-rag problem and a different solution.
The combined rain water butt and planter I built is a far more substantial structure made of stone and cement.
It has stopped the tow rags dead in there tracks.

Brilliant idea, but not for us as I need a screening planter that can be moved for access. A house local to us had their (rented) skip stolen and its contents tipped over their driveway. There are several official traveller sites within 10 miles and we see them regularly sniffing around. Our Labrador soon lets them know she doesn't like them. She is a small working size, but sounds as big as any Doberman from behind a fence - gets them running she does!

What a sad state of affairs that these days when there isn't what I would call proper poverty here in the UK that we have to bolt everything down to prevent theft; when I was a child we really didn't have any money and we could all leave our outside doors unlocked day or night. Pity we can't wire our items into the national grid?

CCTV is a good idea Refugee as long as the cameras don't get stolen?

Our neighbours at the head of the cul-de-sac have a large black Labrador which spends a lot of time outside barking at every little noise but strangely a couple of weeks ago these neighbours were burgled whilst the lady was in the house with her grandchild and the dog never barked?

It calmed down here Colin as soon as I had finished spray painting but then I expected it to. How wonderful it was to cut the grass in warm sunshine; we've also seen a lovely sunset; Bron asked me to take a picture of it.

A quick update. I managed to get into the garage after dinner today and have just knocked off after a paint spraying session. It's been a glorious day and the wind must have admitted defeat at last because it was calm enough to spray without putting up the wind-break.

I copied the light green colour from the YouTube Lorch lathe I posted previously. When I mixed the UPOL P88 with thinners the UPOL took ages to mix but this gloss cellulose top coat mixed rapidly. I decided to give my new LVLP spray gun a try out with this gloss so loaded it up and set about spraying; at first I thought what have I done in choosing this colour it's much too light? By now though I was committed having bought the paint and started to use it so I pressed on and glossed all the items I had previously primed. This new gun was amazing really blasting the paint on which pleased me because I could apply a wet coat in one pass but this takes practice as it is so easy to end up with curtains and runs but all went well; the paint was drying very quickly indeed given how warm it was but the paint doesn't have the high gloss I've achieved before whilst spraying cellulose; it's possibly the cheap £12 per 5 litres thinners but the finish is acceptable; if I wanted a mirror gloss I would have blown over with clear cellulose. I applied a lot of paint so I think I can now start a bit of re-assembly on my next session? Once the legs; counter-shaft frame and tray are assembled it will free up a lot of space in the garage and allow me to concentrate on the actual lathe rebuild; the bed is now also glossed so another big job out of the way.

The green looks very light but this is in full sunshine; once I put the car away it created a shadow giving a truer colour which I can live with; it's a lot better than the original. There are still quite a few items to paint but these are much smaller so won't create as much work for me. It's wonderful though to see the Lorch progressing so well.

Very Green young Col

Many moons ago, in another lifetime, we needed to repaint our Flat. We - me really - set to using a nice shade of Green chosen by SMBO. When I'd finished the first wall it looked truly horrible - patchy, streaky and an odd shade, so we went to the Pub to drown our sorrows and ponder what to do next. When we got back it looked fine, all one colour and beautifully smooth, and it wasn't the Beer that made it look like that. It had simply dried.

That's pretty much the green that most German machine shops seem to be done out in. Machines and metal furniture tend to be all the same green. Are you going to show the chap you bought it from when you are finished? I bet he would be really surprised that such a beauty was hiding under all that crud.

Thanks Big Al. Colour does strange things with changes of light. Years ago I thought I would paint our garage doors in a midnight blue and bought the paint from Johnstone's. This gloss paint looked perfect on the colour chart in the store but when I applied it was horrified by how it looked in bright sunlight; the colour was incredibly light compared to what I has seen on the colour chart so I went back to the store to have it checked? The lady assistant opened the tin and using her finger dabbed a drop of the paint onto a white piece of paper and compared this with the colour chart where it showed exact match; I'll never be caught out again in such a manner; the doors are now painted black.

I'm hopelessly colour blind but I liked the colour that I saw on the YouTube Lorch lathe so matched this finding it to be green; I don't recall seeing a lathe painted this particular colour before so thought I'd give it a try for a change?

Many thanks Colin for taking the trouble to add the slide show and yes the colour does in fact look very similar; Dethleff's works looks impressive. Strange though how I selected the RAL9001 cream/white for my Graduate restoration then now selected this green for the Lorch to find both are actually quite common colours which is unusual considering how many shades of each colour there are?

Your mother gave you good advice Joe.

Because I'm spraying cellulose the colour doesn't change a great deal due to how quickly cellulose dries; it was the rare sunshine which made the green appear so light. I'll see how I feel in the morning whether I blast more paint on because the paint isn't doing any good in the tin? Another couple of days extra won't hurt given the amount of time already spent on this restoration?

Thanks for asking Colin; yes I'll send pictures to Steve whom I bought the Lorch from; I think he might be rather surprised but then again he has already seen my Graduate lathe and Wilmac bandsaw restorations but this Lorch sure will look a lot different from the day when Bron described as a load of rusty metal the day the Lorch arrived?

One thing is certain; the parts from this Lorch are very heavy being substantial cast iron castings; just trying to lift the tray to turn it over is a real challenge working on my own.
