Bring it on: I've had two computers up-dating this morning and it's a blinking nuisance.
I read somewhere that MicroSoft have said they would issue extremely critical up-dates until 2020 but can't find it again now. I'll certainly miss MSE as it's the least interfering anti-virus program I've come across. Edit: It may have been this: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9...ot_for_you - Joe

Have you tried Avast Joe ? www.avast.com It's free and I've used it for years now. You just have to be careful when it tells you to update to a newer version to make sure you click on the "free" version. John

Thanks for the tip; I've heard of it but not used it.
I used to use AVG 'til it got so bloated and gobby. - Joe

Sadly I think it's only malware definition updates, but I suppose it's better than nothing.
Another vote here for Avast Free AV. I've used it for several years now, it has a low system overhead and does the job well for me. No AV is perfect, but so far so good ...... ![]()

I used Avast for a few years, and AVG before that. Both these went the way of bloat, sadly, but Avast is still better than AVG. Like Joe, I'm fine with MSE, which seems to use significantly less resources than any of the third-party options I've tried so far. That said, I've never managed to catch any sort virus. But all my non-technical friends seem to manage it - despite using virus checkers.
I can't help wondering if a certain sub-class out there might attempt a concerted attack when updates for XP/MSE cease. Perhaps it might be prudent to install something else - if only for a few months? But if you're sensible about how you use your computer, and careful about which websites you visit, and careful about the email attachments you open, then it's pretty hard to catch a virus. Not using Internet Explorer and Outlook Express is a good start...

MSE cannot be considered serious virus protection, it fails miserably against pretty much everything else, you could have an infected system and be blissfully unaware..... http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/home-use...laug-2013/

But all my non-technical friends seem to manage it - despite using virus checkers. Microsoft have publicly stated that MSE is the baseline standard that all third-party competitors should meet. So, you'd hope that they'd all be "better", whatever that actually means in the real world. As my previous post indicated, keeping a machine clean has far more to do with how you use your computer, and relatively little to do with what protection software you use. I'm actually not convinced that I need any protection at all, and that's why I'm happy with MSE, which doesn't slow down the machine like the others do. Is that a bit cavalier of me? Perhaps, but I do install other virus checkers from time to time, and perform full scans. I also scan for malware occasionally as well. I've yet to discover anything on my own machines. But that's partly because while I'm no expert, I do know a bit about how computers and websites work. To me, protection software on my local machine is a bit like the airbag on my car: it might help one day, but I'd much rather avoid driving into something in the first place! For the non-expert user, the best protection software - like an airbag - can only offer so much protection. If people learnt to drive properly, airbags wouldn't be needed!

I agree that it is wise to practice safe computing but the fact remains that the low-life hackers and virus creators are often very talented and the AV industry are always playing catch-up. Even the best system administrators fail to prevent some of the infections out there which means that the clean? legit' sites you visit may be infected. To use your motoring analogy, however safely and defensively you drive there is always the possibility that someone else's mistake will involve you. You pays your money as the saying goes, but I can't see the point in trusting to MSE/luck rather than using one of the excellent free AV products. I have not noticed any particular resource problems when using Avast on my Win 7 machine and compared to the likes of McAfee and Symantec it's greased lightning. It's free, the interface is intuitive and updates are very frequent and it consistently scores well in AV tests, what more could you ask for the average computer user?

Oddly, when I first installed MSE it found something that AVG Free had missed.
I'll certainly give Avast a go when I can no longer use MSE. - Joe |
