Yes Alan, there's been a bit of a resurgence in using them for forestry/woodland timber extraction, especially on tight steep sloped sites, there's a bit of a niche market for them now, certain powered forwarders can deal with such sites but they tend to cause a lot of ground compaction hence the horses.

Jonsered used to do a lightweight iron horse that would just about go anywhere.

I designed a logging arch to fit a quad bike when I was considering clear felling all our timber but like a lot of things it never got past the drawing board or in my case the back of a fag packet.

There's another good one on utube showing a logging horse at work, I will post it up if I can find it again.

Here 'tis, the video covers the whole process from felling to extraction by horse, there's a lot of matchsticks in that stick.
The bit with the horse is mainly toward the end so skip first bit if required although it's worth a watch from the begining as he talks you through the proceedure of the felling as well, note he uses the same type chainsaw as wot I have.

My design was similar to this but I also designed a separate hook up bogie arch to lift the rear of 24 ft sticks so as to cut down on journey times when 12 ft sawlogs were needed at the landing point ie: process the logs lengths to 12 ft at the landing point rather than at stump.

I also used that technique, but the kids removed it one day and the result was expensive for them to say the least.
