Many thanks Tony; Refugee and David for more suggestions.

I did try breathing on the valves Tony but it didn't help and this afternoon I played around with the scanner and used Gimp2 to change the image which did make quite a bit of difference but more practice would be needed?

I've not tried using a camera Refugee nor have I tried sticking them in the freezer Ed but these are two useful suggestions to know about.

Lawrence; Refugee and David many thanks for the LED suggestion which I've also tried this afternoon with some success but not as good as shown in the excellent video David. I tried a wind up LED torch then switched on my new LED floodlight and yes; viewing at certain angles made a lot of difference and I could just make out the identification. Also whilst in the workshop it was bright with sunshine and again at certain angles I could just read the details so perhaps it is UV which makes the difference?

All your suggestions are very welcome though and I hope they will prove useful to other members; it's amazing what I learn by asking such a simple question on GF; thanks everyone. I can confirm the valves to be correct and in their rightful holders.

I intended spending a full day working on this Emerson cabinet today but got side tracked both this morning and this afternoon and at this time of day I can't be bothered making a start. I did pop into the workshop though and glue up a separated joint and the cabinet is now nipped in the big woodworking vice until the glue sets.

Tomorrow morning is already spoken for and I'm also expecting a phone call to say the Little Greene paint we ordered has arrived at the store so yet another trip out; these days I only need to think about going into the workshop for something to crop up to divert my attention? Anyway a bit of progress has been made so far.

I've mentioned before that a good way of checking if a TV remote is working is to point it into the lens of a digital camera and if all is well, it will light up ultra violet in the view-finder screen.

I thought remote controls used infra red or has it changed in recent years?

It doesn't have to be a digital camera, when I was a TV tech it was standard practice to operate and point the remote control towards a standard home video camera, the infra red emitter would show up on the monitor/TV.

Prior to infra red remote controls it was ultrasonic using an electronic transducer, prior to that it was the old pinger, any old techs remember the pinger, murphy used to use them as I remember, long after they became defunct and the technology had moved on some customers still referred to the remote control as the pinger, at least around the Manchester area anyways.

Edit: Maybe photo cells were used as well earlier on? can't quite remember.

yes I remember the clicker remotes no good if you had cage birds with a bell .
more recent ones use blue tooth.

Or jangling car keys, remember the early touch tune, trying to explain to the customer that madams carpet was the problem not the TV....

The remotes on our TV and DVD show up UV Joe - I checked before I posted. I guess the same results would ensue with UV - not visible to the naked eye, but visible through a digital camera.

I would have thought there would be a safety issue with UV, unless I am reading this wrong?

All mine are Infra Red.
