Congrats Joe, looks more or less altogether on the outside, with luck it will be on the inside too, hey for a tenner yer can't go wrong, no woodworm to worry about.

Do some pics and and a bit of a story when you have it home. I can see a R1155, an Eddy (for Al) and a HRO next...

Oh, I'll be posting about it alright, especially the cosmetic side as it looks like the white markings are just printed on the top of the black finish.

Ignore my e-mail sent ten secs ago saying as there had only been one bid on it, early in the listing so I guess it wasn't you - I thought you'd try to snipe in the closing seconds!!

Well done on getting that at a bargain basement price - great radios to work on - easy access to the components on the underside, and designed as a general coverage receiver with no extraneous features of a military nature, so well suited to a domestic environment, unlike say an 1155. Well worth the effort to bring it back to life and you'll be pleased with the performance - indeed, it might even wean you off DAC90As!

Hi Joe, I can't comment on the lettering type as it is a very long time since I last saw a PCR in the flesh, some times these things come up quite well with a gentle clean, if it is printed but bad then maybe rub on transfers or something or a steady hand with a fine brush if you want it to stand out newish looking. I did a Hallicrafters front panel that was in about the same state as that PCR, albeit it had raised lettering (raised by not a lot!) it's in the gallery under Hallicrafters SX17, I have always found the best way is to think about it for quite a while before jumping in.

Wise words. It's the old dilemma of is original and scruffy best or new and decent-looking. It's harder to decide as neither will effect the operation or safety.

I agree Joe, if the set both inside and outside is say 90% original it's a shame if it gets messed up, as the outside is the most visual I find it's the final job on that that either makes it good or not so good, it is the old dilema, the choice is with the owner/repairer, my old R1155 is 99% original and virtually untouched, fortunately the front panel lettering is engraved on seperate unscrewable escutcheon plates so I could get that bit looking very much like, however the originall wrinkle finnish on the panel is of the very fine variety, the general consensus when doing a wrinkle finnish is that the job has to be heated to get the right reaction but the R1155's front panel is spot welded to the rest of the receiver, so thats a dilema for me I suppose, even if I got the wrinkle correct the colours on the tuning scale are a bit faded (but perfectly usable) so would a new looking front panel look ok with that...as you say a dilema, no doubt I will reach a conclusion at some point, a better scale would probably decide it.
I realise this can become a hot topic, restoration/consevation etc but sometimes it can be a difficult one to decide. I guess if we get some enjoyment from our endeavors then that's all that matters.........

Err, it needs an external PSU, Aerial and Speaker just like the R1155 does.

If you check the link to the e-bay listing at Joe's first post you'll see that it comes with a Philips mains unit - plug 'n play - but looking at the entry point of the flex into the PCR, I don't think Joe will be plugging it in and playing with it any time soon!
