For quite some time now there has been a problem with access speed to the forum: it gradually got to the point where access was not possible. It's better now (15:10 hrs.) but that file fails to completely load here. I suspect an Internet problem somewhere, rather that our PCs or the Forum.

Hello Al, thanks for the reply, the problem I have had with that link started before I posted it to the forum ie: opening it direct from a google search to my PC, I am not very good with PCs but I always seem to get the following particular problem when down loading a PDF file from the net.

Eg: 1. I find a PDF download on the net which I want to down load...I click on the link and it downloads and opens fine, this does not happen to often!

Eg: 2. Ditto.........I click on the link and it does not download on to the screen....the screen (window) stays all white, the bottom bar shows the download progress ie: Y kilobytes of X kilobytes down loaded.. about 3 or 4 kilobytes before the end a little window pops up with an ok button on it, I press that and the little window disappears but the main window is still all white.
If I hit the refresh the same process occurs but sometimes the PDF document will actually appear, also sometimes if I hit the back button then go forward again the document will suddenly appear, once the document appears it can be saved/manipulated/linked as normal. This as always happened on my PC.
The biggest problems I have always had are PDF down loads and trying to get the PC to communicate reliably with a printer.
Can you or any other members shed any light on this for me?

Try this, I find it even faster than Firefox. and shows PDF files in the browser window, with the option to download it.

I use Firefox 3.6.28 under Windows 2000 + SP4, so using Chrome is not an option here.

Lawrence: I don't know what software & hardware you have there, but I suggest that you have a good look at the following:
(a) do you have any 'temp' files that are full of junk? If so, clean them out.
(b) have you run an anti-virus check lately? If not, now's the time.
© if you have any software installed to block / detect various forms of malware - such as spyware, remote monitoring s/ware, etc., now's the time to check for those sort of nasties too.
(d) Check you browser cache: it may be full of junk - including tracking cookies, etc. These things can really slow down a PC.
(e) Run a disk defragmenter program.
(f) Virtual disk size adequate? Usually, 2 to 2.5 times the amount of main memory (RAM) is the usual figure.
(g) Obvious, I know, but is your PC a 1 GHz machine or slower? If it is, then it's PC replacement time!
(h) Do you have enough real main memory installed? 512 MB absolute minimum; 1 GB better, 4 GB best of all.
(i) Wi-Fi connection? Are you getting a decent connection speed? Usually, something like 24 Mb/s (or less) implies a weak signal . . . . too weak.

There are probably some other factors I've over-looked. I'm sure someone will add to that list.

OK done that and when I select it as my browser all my top bars (file, edit, print etc) disappear, it just looks like the normall google search page, checked my internet settings in the PCs control box and it says that internet explorer is my browser, tried shutting down PC and restarting...still the same...appologies for any ignorance.

You don't want to use Internet Explorer: far too prone to being 'got at' by all the nasties on the 'Net. I'd switch to Firefox if I was you. After IE, it takes a bit of getting used to, sure, but worth it. I made the switch about 2 years ago; never looked back; never went back; not going back.
