Well the tuning cap it amazingly free, but the darn thing is jammed when restrung (according to the Trader sheet).
I am missing something blindingly obvious!

Iffy bearing that means the shaft's binding when sideways thrust is applied?

More like something blindingly obvious though (like the wrong resistor by a factor of 100! - you need Steve's eagle eyes 'round it).

Normally it turns out that it hasnt been strung right... or two many turns, or the turns are over lapping, on the knob spindle. Usual cure for the later is a rub with rosin... no anyone who plays violin?

Double checked the stringing, when the dial carriage is off it works, put that on it does not, I think the tension is not right, o I am now on the hunt for a spring!

I'd be inclined to sort that out first. Put that valve in and measure that aerial.

Just a tip, normally the gang is either fully open or closed before the drum runs out of string and pulls on the spring (assuming the spring is set within the tuning drum) this is usually what happens if it's a bad restring job...not saying that it is, it might be something else.

If the tuning cap is freely moving and when strung, the drum won't move, it's almost certain to be wrongly strung. You must have the right number of turns on the spindle and in the right direction, and when the cord leaves the drum, it must go the right way round. There are three service sheets covering the FB10 - Trader, R&TV, and ERT. Only the Trader and ERT sheets show a diagram for the stringing, and I think the ERT one is clearest. I've attached it and hope it might clarify the arrangement Mark. Not the position of the drum with the tuning cap fully enmeshed, and make sure the drum is tightened in that position so that when the cap is fully open or fully closed, the cord enters and leaves the drum as it should. (Entry slots at top with the cap fully closed).

I think you said earlier that if you inject a tone at the volume control centre pin you get a tone out of the speaker, so if the set is dead, you need to check with the tracer RF probe at say pin 5 of V3 (from IFT2 to detector), and if no sigs there, pin 1 of V2 (Grid, from IFT1) to see if you can tune any signals in. If not, the problem is most likely in the front end.

The lad wanted to go fishing this morning, so after 40 winks I have just got this restrung.

One of the problems was the tuning gang is held onto an upright by 3 bolts with grommets into to upright. In essence the tuning cap is about an inch off the chassis "floating". These Grommets are of a fiber material with a brass insert. Problem was there was not much left of the fiber so the tuning cap was all skew wifty. One I put some new grommets in and got the tension right works perfect.
