of a similar tack of misuse of company material, when I started out with BR S&T in the early 80's the number of messrooms and workshops that had transistor radios powered from a taped up block of DS1 or DS3 Dry cells was impressive. The irony of a compact receiver being powered a battery 4 - 8 times its size seemed lost on most.
The reason was because the signalling cells were easily available from each maintenance units stock whereas "domestic" dry cells were much more strictly controlled and used in much smaller numbers mainly for meters, meggers, linemans phones etc
