That would have worked badly. 2" quad tape has the magnetic domains aligned across the tape, hence utterly wrong for audio or helical scan video.

of a similar tack of misuse of company material, when I started out with BR S&T in the early 80's the number of messrooms and workshops that had transistor radios powered from a taped up block of DS1 or DS3 Dry cells was impressive. The irony of a compact receiver being powered a battery 4 - 8 times its size seemed lost on most. 
The reason was because the signalling cells were easily available from each maintenance units stock whereas "domestic" dry cells were much more strictly controlled and used in much smaller numbers mainly for meters, meggers, linemans phones etc

i remember the AV3420 when it was new in the 1970s. I feel lopsided at the thought of carrying one using the shoulder strap.

I now have a thought in my mind it was possible to configure the AV3420 case strap to form a kind of back pack arrangement? though it would be more a pain putting it on / off each time you wanted to use the controls.

Not with case we had at STOIC (Student Television Of Imperial College). We eventually bought a backpack.

I well remember the racket the slitters made in 3M, though the mag tape slitters were much much quieter than the masking tape slitters in the top plant.

Somewhere in the late 70s someone made a suggestion in Practical TV about refilling Philips 1500 cassettes with something else: it caused a bit of a stir, the coercivity being significantly different.

Them were the days.

Astonishingly, we've just been given two VERA tape heads, both brand new in box. Thank you Chris Toby.

Not only does the Broadcast Engineering Museum now hold the largest collection of VERA parts (including the spool in a cabinet shown in that thread) but we also have the Marconi Stille audio recorder on loan from BBC Archives. The Science Museum has an M-S machine, in nicer condition than ours. I think there's another M-S machine in the Czech Republic. The remaining VERA parts (a spool and a tape head) are held by the Science Museum.

I remember reading that when VERA was using sheet steel tape it had to be kept in a locked room when running, as a tape break would have caused anyone nearby to potentially meet a sticky end!

VERA used conventional 1/2" plastic tape which was basically harmless. The Marconi-Stille (and the earlier Blattnerphone) used steel tape that's a bit like clock spring. You kept well away from those when they were running.

In my collection I have a very heavy Philips EL3400 VTR with a dedicated camera. This duo was used for industrial purposes. It comes from 1965. Its construction is very solid and in my opinion after a little adaptation it allows for use in field conditions.

A quick glance at that list shows some oddities. Here's one I noticed. The ACR25 and TC100 are shown separately but both are identical to standard quadruplex. Another is that MII used analogue YCbCr components, not RGB as stated.

There are also some characters that aren't rendering correctly, though this might be browser or OS dependent.
