They look tall enough to be capable of being cut down before the screw holes and new holes drilled so the hinges can be fitted to the narrow thickness of the lid and cabinet. Ludicrously cheap at under a dollar each! (Didn't check MOV or P&P).

Thanks guys, I've ordered up half a dozen of them since the postage is $12! Somehow it felt easier to pay the postage when ordering more than the two I need. I am believer in the 'will come in handy one day' philosophy.

I also ordered up a variety of small box hinges so I'll play around when they get here and see what ones fit the best and look the nicest.

I have seen another web site in the UK this time. They do two types that might fit.

I went with fixed hinges in the end. I did some testing with the become apart ones but there was too much play and since the top and bottom of the case are not held aligned in any way, it relies on the hinges. If I had used them the top would be 'wobbly' and that wouldn't do at all!
I'll make a short cable/string to hold the lid just off the vertical when I'm using the gadget.

So now I'll shoot some clear coat and put it all back together and then on to the next challenge.

Right, the Solar is done. I just have to fit a hook for the retaining cable that prevents the lid from falling too far back, etc.

I'll keep an eye out for other hinges just on the off chance I find something like the originals.
