I know that originally tuning cap bearings will have been lightly packed with grease, but I find that a needle point oiler with light oil does a good job at freeing up the bearings. Just a little spot of oil on the pulley pins helps reduce friction too. When tuning cords slip it's often a combination of things - a stiff tuning cap spindle, stretched dial scord and weakened springs. Maplin used to sell a needle point oiler with light PTFE loaded oil in them, but seem not to stock them any more. (No surprises there then).

If you get a signal from the speaker when you inject a tone into the slider of the volume control Mark, that exonerates the detector, AVC and audio stage. If you then inject a signal into pin 1 of V2 and get a tone, that suggests that the 2nd IF amp stage is working. If you then apply the RF tracer probe to the same pin of V2, but don't hear any tunable signals, that points to a fault in the first IF, front end/mixer stages.

I bought a manky spares or repair FB10 (for a tenner I think) at last year's NVCF as my son wanted a green one, so I restored it and airbrushed it green. I wrote a thread about it at the time but the pics have probably gone, so I've attached a couple of before and after pics. Not to everyone's taste I'm sure, but my son likes it. (I must get on and re-attach pics to old posts as they often make little sense without the pics).

Either the cap is not sat right on the chassis or the gum is so severe it fails to work.
Despite heating, lubrication with 3 in 1 and grease it is still tight (No comments please).
Unfortunately the phantom has already been here.

Take the dial cord off for now. We'll come to that battle later (or you will...). If it's been phantomed, then have the correct mounting screws or whatever it used been fitted, because they might be shorting out the tuning cap.

If it's stiff, then take it off and put it in a dishwasher. (Mine if you like.) Then put a little oil and grease on the bearings.

When you put it back on, check the mountings.
