Hi Steve - welcome from me, too! Glad to hear you're on an even keel too 
We have a 20 minute "edit window" here, which I think is the same as UKVRRR. When this place first started, they didn't put any restrictions on that, but unfortunately that lead to people modifying their posts in ways that confused entire threads. Also, for a while, we allowed people to edit their attachments at any time, but when one individual decided to leave in a huff, he deleted all of his attachments from his posts, which has left a lot of not very meaningful threads as a result. In short, our initial idealism was soon tempered by the reality of human behaviour.
Interestingly, the EEVBlog forum lets you edit your own posts at any time. So that leads to people making posts that are just entire quotes of a post just in case they suspect someone might want to re-write history. That leads to bad feeling, and - most importantly - the database being much bigger than it needs to be. So on balance, I think we're being sensible in our approach.
On the whole, we're very laid back here. Enjoy
