Content of some sites sometime slow to load-why?

We haven't had a note of the sync speeds yet. These can usually be seen by logging in to the router. If the sync speeds are well above the download speeds then it's a different sort of problem.

I have noticied that now Windows 10 has control, the system downloads updates in the background without any notification whatsoever. Often when running slow I open task manager and see system software busily churning away. I sometimes wonder, but then a while later (presumably when things have totally downloaded) I get irritated with the usual updating, don't turn off, when trying to shutdown.

There are a large number of items 'churning away', as you put it, Tracy. I've ended several, but am not sure what some of them do, so I don't want to adversely affect the operation of my computer by ending processes which may be needed.

Google the unknown processes to see whether they are useful or not.

Last time I had slow internet I shut down all connected computers and cycled the power on the router and then waited for it to fully come back on line.
It worked well and I got a full speed data hungry Libre Office upgrade done in a timely manner afterwards.

The computer and router are both switched off at the mains when not in use, usually overnight, and for up to4 hours in the afternoon. The download speed is still slow at boot-up despite this!

It's best to leave the router switched on 24/7. This allows the router and exchange to optimise the speed. Frequent shut downs can reset the speed to something lower than the line can achieve.

Have you chacked to see if you can get fibre to the cabinet?. TalkTalk changed me to fiber to cabinet about 2 years ago and it cost me slightly less money too. I normally have 38Mbs download, sometime more. if you can and do change it should not cost anymore as fibre to cabinet is pretty standard now,

Also, since you don't like Talktalk very much, consider another ISP if you're out of contract period. I've used Plusnet for years. They've had ups and downs but one of the better of the main suppliers. I think they have some good deals at the moment.

ALso worth trying to get hold of anothr computer. Not just for testing. If your only computer fails then you can be really stuffed. Plenty of decent machines for almost nothing these days. I saw some Core 2 machines for well under £200 in a local phone/computer etc shop. Also older laptops for under £200. Sometimes well under.

Id agree with John, I'm on their package that is fibre to the cabinet and have download speeds of 38Mbs and upload of 10Mbs at no extra cost, I'm with talk talk too. Previously when copper only Talk Talk said that if the speed got any lower they would have to release me from the contract if I didn't move to their base fibre package. For a big town we have dreadful copper broadband speeds in certain areas.
