I didn't know how the name Motorola came about, though.

Even in 1950s there were still some battery valve radiograms that used windup players, at least two portable models (one an Alba with portable attache radio only version too). Also two battery valve tape machines with play only spring driven (oen famouse German one). An early Sony transistor reel to reel portable was also windup.
One of each would be nice.

I should know this, but how do I get to post pictures on this thread? Over on UKVRRR there is an option 'Go Advanced' at the bottom of the page, but I've forgotten what the equivalent is on this forum!

If you're doing a quick reply you won't see any facility to attach pictures or files. The trick is either to click the reply button or if you've already started in the quick reply box to click "Preview Post". Then you'll see the facility to attach files. Just click the "Browse" button to bring up a file dialogue.

I've taken a couple of pictures of the AG2101D, one of which shows the mechanism from the underside, including the load/eject mechanism.  This is basically a swivelling plate to which are attached levers which operate the different functions. E.G., putting a record into the slot pushes a pin rearwards which causes the pickup to move over the beginning of the disc, where it is lowered into the playing position, and when the stylus reaches the end of the run-out groove, te reverse procedure applies, opening the microswitch contacts, lifting the arm and moving it to the rest position, and ejecting the disc.  During this process the spring loaded 'record keeper', a 1.5" diameter disc is lowered.  Obviously excess friction in any of these parts will cause a malfunction, so I've cleaned and relubed all of them, so hopefully it will now work as designed after I've reassembled it!
