Fairly acceptable reception ISTR, though we were VERY close to Crystal Palace etc.

If you were really close to CP your bed frame could have been the right sort of size to resonate at Channel 1.

There was an old tale once doing the rounds that someone was using something like bed frames in his loft to draw free energy out of a local TV transmitter. The story was that this was noticed at the transmitter... affected the "impedance of free space" or somesuch.

Probably just a tale and nonsense ?

We were a mile or so away in Dulwich. In my lower sixth I built a slow-scan ground station for weather satellite imagery with the assistance of a mentor from the British Astronomical Association & Royal Astronomical Society. There was an enormous issue with signal swamping from CP - my aerials were on the roof of the DT block which was made from reinforced concrete and was a pretty good aerial in its own right.

The BBC invited me and my DT supervisor (who helped me weld up the aerials) up to the transmitter and we got a guided tour round the underground transmitter rooms etc. They were very helpful too with the interference issue.
