Well, it took a while but I believe I've sorted that nasty intermittent. It turned out to be the Cal Tone switch on the back. It's a 6PDT slider arrangement and I couldn't find one anywhere - except a secondhand one on eBay for too much money. So, I removed the switch, dismantled it, gave it a good cleaning, and put it back together. First time around I ended up with one switch not working at all so, after repeating the exercise things seemed to finally settle down. I can't say how long it will last but for now, recording is working fine. Now I have to do some carpentry to do to make space for it
