I picked them up on eBay.   I fixed one and it seems to be fine (repaired the record circuitry).   I fixed a number of problems on the other one - it had been 'got at' -  the record head was wired up incorrectly and there was noise in one channel.   Both of those are sorted.   I'm left with a nasty intermittent - about once every five to ten minutes I lose signal level (partial or complete) on one or both channels for about a second or two, then it's fine again.    Playback of a recorded tape is fine so my problems are most likely in the record area - or maybe power supply or bias oscillator.  Troubleshooting this is nasty so I have a feeling this one will be on the bench for a while.

Ah well, Winter is coming so this will keep me busy for a while.........

John,

Those Teacs are nicely made machines and there are various models that share the same styling and controls.

By coincidence I have my A-4300SX on the bench at the moment. I’ve owned it since 1987. The grease in the pinch roller pivot had gone sticky and some of the switches needed cleaning to get both channels to record.

Keep the reels turning  Smile

Nice decks. Poking around putting gentle pressure on various parts or the boards etc with a non conductive stick sometimes helps that and resolder all the connector pins. I have some logic boards out of a later Tascam deck somewhere if you need any parts.

Andy.
Well, it took a while but I believe I've sorted that nasty intermittent.   It turned out to be the Cal Tone switch on the back.   It's a 6PDT slider arrangement and I couldn't find one anywhere - except a secondhand one on eBay for too much money.   So, I removed the switch, dismantled it, gave it a good cleaning, and put it back together.  First time around I ended up with one switch not working at all so, after repeating the exercise things seemed to finally settle down.   I can't say how long it will last but for now, recording is working fine.   Now I have to do some carpentry to do to make space for it  Smile

Cheers,

John
Hi John, a search of my bits only reveals DT switches up to 4 poles, but I have some nice DPDT min relays if they would be of any use.

Ed
Thanks Ed,

Mouser has 6PDT sliders but alas the pitch is just too small so won't fit on the Cal Tone circuit board.  I found the actual one I need in Mouser's catalogue but out of stock and they want min order 100 units and wait time of 14 weeks so that's not happening!

For now, things seem ok so I'll check Mouser from time to time to see if they get stock of what I'm after.

Cheers,   John
