I'd look up "Manhattan construction" - basically, take a piece of blank (unetched) PCB as your ground plane, copper side up.

Punch out or cut a load of small bits of PCB, say 5mm across. Stick these onto the ground  plane (using the gel form of superglue), again, copper side up - these are your connection nodes. If you need to solder something to GND, solder it directly to the ground plane. A lot of RF prototyping (and one-off construction) is done this way.

Totally agree, I've used this method many times, no artist work from me though.
