I think a lot of my problem was down to lack of familiarity with how to do things in Linux. Many years ago I was sent on a Unix course so I could act as a backup for one of our other engineers. The problem was that I never needed to use it so all the knowledge drifted away.
I have to say that the more I use Mint the more I like it. It is certainly more intuitive than windows. One thing I particularly like is that, unlike Windows, it does not have sub-menus of sub-menus of sub-menus where you forget how you got there and take a age to return to.

I've spent more than enough time on this today. Next time round I'll have a look at networking the Mint machine to my other PC.
