I remember reverse-engineering IR protocols using nothing but an analogue 'scope in a very dark room with nothing more than the persistence of vision and the decay time of the phosphor to help. That was nearly 20 years ago, back when the internet was of limited use for that sort of thing. Today, it's all out there, and we have Rigols to capture the waveform with ease. Too easy!
