I did hear one strong signal on 15m.: Italian, I believe. But his audio was almost unreadable: not dissimilar to the distortion that used to arise on 144 MHz A.M. (those were the days) when the Aurora was active. The distortion was so bad - yet he was making plenty of contacts without difficulty - that I can't believe that it was his TX that was maladjusted: no, not to that extent.
Must have been due to severe propagation disturbance . . . which marries in with your report.
