The Landrover was ex military, manufactured circa 1972, it was manufactured for the military, while with the military it did not have a civilian reg number,  the civilian reg number came after it was released from the military, definitely a military vehicle  (Air Portable Landrover Series 3)  and definitely an Air Portable VIN (Series 3) on the V5 document, the VIN on the V5 document was the same as the VIN  on the vehicles ID plate that was fixed to the side of the seat base and that was the same number that was stamped on the inside of one of the front  dumb irons, I owned and ran the vehicle for approx 20 years, it was LHD when I got it but it left the Landover factory as RHD.

I once owned and ran another ex military Landrover, an 88" Series 1, that one had a Q plate.

My query though is really why DVLA would give it a newer plate than its build.
A late friend of mine (Sam Piper) from Irvine used to go the Government sales as they were known in the 70's & 80's and bought many Land Rovers and believe it or not Minis. All had to be re-registered, the paperwork was quite involved and yours truly (if I had a day off or on holiday) along with Sam would take them to Bothwell Street in Glasgow to get checked over before they were issued with the new plate.

Q plates are for kit cars or those without a traceable identity.

I think the DVLA issued age related plates later on but in the 1970's an ex military car was just given the current years registration, this was certainly true in 1979. I had a 1972 Rover P5B saloon that was ex air force it had the original number stencilled under the bonnet. It was disposed of in 1979 and was registered on a T plate. My ex boss bought some ex military escort estates in 1980 they were MK1 models (which were discontinued in 1974/5) but were registered V registration. 
I think the rules changed after then and if the age of a car was known or proved it was given an age related plate usually a number that had not been issued at the time.
I saw a lot of classic cars back in the 1990's that had lost their original number usually to a number plate dealer I suppose. These were issued with an 1963 A registration usually a unissued Scottish number, later on these reissued numbers were made non transferrable presumably to stop owners selling them on and getting a third number.
I had to get the build date for one of my Rovers from Gaydon to get historic status and free road tax in 1997 as it was registered in 1973 which meant it wasn't exempt on the original scheme (25 years) as Bliar's sorry, Blair's government put a stop to it before 1973 cars became exempt. 
However I was able to prove the car was built in 1972 which meant it qualified. 
Lots of decent cars were needlessly wasted on the original scrappage scheme there was a report in one of the papers about a (I think) Morris minor that was in decent condition that had been cashed in I think there had been an appeal to save it but I don't know if it succeeded .
My parents neighbour's daughter cashed in her immaculate 26000 mile Toyota that her gran had given her for a new tatbox because the road tax was cheap... I really wanted to ask her how many years it would take for the saving in road tax to pay for the new car but thought I had better not!
