The size of the original cells have defeated me as well. They sound like 2/3F, but such a thing doesn't seem to exist.

The 'D' NiMH arrived and I gave them a charge before putting them in.
They do indeed fit, although it's a bit like SWMBO getting in to a Size 12 or me into my old 32" Jeans

   

So, it's looking more promising. However, now things are settling down there are a few more questions to answer:-

I haven't a clue what the charge Current is, or for that matter the actual consumption.
The Keys appear to be less 'dodgy' when it's on charge, which may imply that the internal Voltages are not right.
It's still very grubby.

I'm girding up my (proverbial) Loins to take it to bits.
