RetrotechUK is just under 2 weeks away!

Roughly 160 tables have been booked and it promises to be a packed and lively show, as usual. Stall holder entry is 7.30, early entry 9am, general entry 10.30. Show closes at 3pm.

See https://www.retrotechuk.com for times and directions.

This year there will be a large exhibition in an adjacent hall, celebrating 50 years of the BVWS and 100 years of Television. Lots of vintage TVs and other technology in operation from a number of different exhibitors. Chris Wood will post more details here in due course.

The Broadcast Engineering Conservation Group will have a display at the side of the main sales hall and should be bringing an outside broadcast vehicle for display outside.

The very popular Dulwich Wireless Museum Bring & Buy stall will be in the exhibition hall this year.

The caterers upgraded last year to a very smart purpose built "shipping container" kitchen, and their food was excellent. Look for them at the far end of the front of the sports complex.

If you arrive at busier times, there will be 100 spaces of overflow parking available in front of the 'Keller Civil Engineering' offices on the A423 Oxford Road, just behind the Connexion - there is a pathway through to save walking by the road.

Based on previous years, the sheer quantity and variety of goods on sale is sure to delight. I always have a wonderful time bargain hunting and never go home empty handed.

This year the BVWS celebrates 50 years.

Founded on the 26th April 1976, to mark this day our nearest event to that is the upcoming RetroTechUK on the 17th May 2026

This year’s RetroTechUK will be the largest event held since moving to Sports Connexion Coventry and we will be using the second hall to incorporate:-
• an enlarged bring and buy, (so dig all those unwanted items you’ve not touched or used)
• displays of Television broadcast history by the team at MCR21,
• Jonathan Hill one the original founders on the history of the society
Also as part of our celebrations, we also thought it was appropriate to also mark the 100 years of television whose milestones include:-
• 100 years since the first demonstration on 26th Jan 1926,
• 90 years since the start of public broadcasting on 2nd November 1936
• 80 years since the restarting of television after WW2 on the 7th June 1946 and much more.
These events will be marked by a display of members sets from the periods since 1936 along with TV accessories and ephemera that show how television developed from John Logie Baird’s early efforts into what we watch today.
PS. I am still looking for 1980s colour TV preferably with Teletext to include in the display, please let me know if you have one you could lend us.

Baird first demonstrated television in light and shade on 26 January 1926:

I was definitely able to transmit the living image, and it was the first time it had been done. But how to convince the sceptical, hide-bound, select and exclusive scientific world? ... Would they admit that a wretched nonentity working with soap boxes in a garret had done something which many of them had stated was not possible?

Baird invited, among others, members of Royal Institution and a reporter from The Times to witness his achievement.
Other screenings will include Fools on the Hill, a gentle comedy by Jack Rosenthal, that was made in 1986 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the start of the 405 line service from Alexandra Palace. I was part of a small audience at the recording and have a copy of the script.
Please note that the October 2025 date that has been promoted by the RTS and IET is regarded by most TV historians as spurious. The 90th anniversary was celebrated in January 2016.

The BVWS Online Auction will go live at 10:00am on the 9th of February and will run for one week.
The first auction item (Lot 1) will end at 17:01 on the 16th February.
Each auction item end time will then be spaced at 1 minute intervals.
The auction is private to BVWS members.
If you have not yet renewed your BVWS membership, you can do so online on the BVWS website or by post in the usual manner.
Non BVWS members may still view the auction lot pictures and the catalogue (later today) on the BVWS website as usual but cannot participate.
All paid up BVWS members will receive a special e-mail on the evening of Friday the 7th February.
The email will contain the details of how to access the online auction with the website link and password.
When you first access the site with these details, you will need to register an account using your email address as the user name and then make up a password of your choice.
MAKE SURE THIS IS THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS AS WE HOLD ON THE BVWS DATABASE!
Remember when you access the auction you use the details given above, but to bid you will need to log in using your own details – this is to differentiate between individual bidders.
The auction itself is a timed auction running for one week along the lines of an eBay online auction, although it is actually hosted on the AirAuctoneer web platform.
Bidding
The bidding is the same as with eBay. For example if a lot is £20 and you bid £50 then the system only takes £20 as your bid and keeps the upper figure in reserve to automatically increase your bids in increments up to your maximum if another bidder places a bid. So to be clear; your highest bid will only be your maximum bid amount if another bidder has bid more, the same or close to the same.
Warning: Do not leave your bid to within the last few seconds as you may find that due to internet latency, your bid does not get registered. The AirAuctioneer platform is hosted on the other side of the world from the UK and Europe.
Collection and Shipping
The BVWS WILL NOT undertake any shipping activity of auction items.
There will be several regional collection points where you may collect your 'won' items from. These will be Rosyth Scotland, Rugby, Cheddar, Scunthorpe, Virginia Water and Devizes in the UK. International Bidders will have their items held at the BVWS store until arrangements for collection can be agreed.
Moving your items to these regional outlets and the subsequent contact and organisation is kindly supplied by members of the Committee voluntarily and may need time to organise and arrange for you to collect.
It may be possible for items to be 'passed-on' via collectors so that they may reach you but the BVWS will not be involved in those arrangements other than the stated sites above. Neither will we (THE BVWS or Committee members) be held responsible for any problems with the items once they have left our hands.
If you would like to volunteer to be a 'Pick Up' location please do get in touch with me via a PM as we need East of London/Kent and North West and North East of England collection points.

This autumn's BVWS Biggleswade Meet & Auction will run this weekend (Sunday, September 15th).

There will be an auction. A partial auction list is linked on the BVWS website (www.bvws.org.uk), more lots will be added tomorrow. A full list will be available at Biggleswade (just ask Rob at the "IT hub").

The Weatherley Centre (SG18 8JH) has off-street parking right by the hall, and and free on-street parking very close by. It is located only a mile from either of the two Biggleswade exit roundabouts on the A1. Train services are excellent (under an hour from London), and the station is a 12 minute walk from the hall.

Doors open 0930 and the auction starts at 1230. Only BVWS members can bid in the auction but you can join on the day!

I have had a table cancellation so if you want to dispose of stuff on the day, the table costs only £10 more than the entry fee! PM me if interested.

I hope to see lots of you at the Meet this Sunday.

all the best
