HMV Transistor model id required

[glowinganode]

Hi all, pick up a tranny at the local car boot sale for £2, looks like the one here but is badged HMV rather than Marconi, I guess it's exactly the same gubbins but re-badged as the outside looks identical.
I can't find a model number marked on it and I require some service data, can anybody help please? Am I likely to find it on the BVWS cd's?
Thanks, Rob.

Seemingly it's an HMV 2156/2158 which is electrically the same as the Ferguson 3168 and the Marconiphone 4156. Trader sheet 1920, available for instant download from the VRF.

Interesting.
The Index says it's sheet 1940 but the CD only goes up to 1900, despite what the Header says.
Is that right?

Same on the ones that I got when I joined BVWS some years ago. The third disc says it goes from sheets 1601 to 1999 but the last sheet is No 1940.

Those CDs were made by Paul back in 2002, and he also marketed a set of four CDs as a commercial enterprise. In July 2008 he issued an updated version as a commercial venture, this time on a DVD, with many more circuits, and more versions of the same models - EG Trader Sheet/ERT/Manufacturers’ Service Data. For example, the Freebie CDs only have the Bush DAC90A Trader Sheet, whereas the latest DVD - referred to as 'UK Vintage Radio Service Data Release 1.0, 2009' - has the original Bush Service data, which runs to 8 excellent quality pages. The irritating thing with almost all Trader sheets is that the components have different numbers, so R1 on a Trader sheet might be R9 on the maker's sheet, so when quoting numbers, it's best to make clear which data the cap, resistor, inductor etc, is taken from. (Nothing to do with Paul of course).

Those which can be downloaded for £1.99 are based on the DVD-ROM, which isn’t cheap, at £39,99, but on the other hand, that’s just the equivalent of twenty downloads, so I guess it soon pays for itself. Also, it’s better indexed under makers’ names, so is easier to use. Obviously the price reflects the effort involved in compiling often several sets of data on some 8,300 radios and other items. Anyone who bough the previous four CDs, which I imagine few did, can upgrade to the DVD-ROM for £19.99. (Santa brought mine down the chimney, Christmas 2010, because I’d been a very good boy!).

As to the particular HMV radio in question, it's all part of the general confusion caused by many seemingly different manufacturers who had merged or ben taken over, using identical or very similar chassis if not always indentical cabinets for what is basically, the same radio marketed as different brands to give an illusdion of more chioce. Some common examples of seemingly different brands of radios (and no doubt TVs) in the 'same family' are:

Philips-Stella-Cossor-Mullard
Ekco-Dynatron-Pye-Invicta-Ferranti-PAM
Regentone-RGD-Argosy-KB-Philco-ITT
Ever Ready-Lissen-Berec (British Ever Ready Co)
Banner-GEC-Sobell-Materadio-McMichael
Elizabethen-Elpico
Marconiphone-HMV-Ferguson-Ultra-Columbia-Thorn-BRC-Philco(UK)
Bush-Murphy (later Rank-Bush-Murphy).

Hope that's of interest.

Thanks guys, it is indeed trader sheet 1940 not 1920.
I was too lazy to look so I did an instant download, I didn't realise the cd's went that high.
Thanks for the info David, I find the inter company relationships fascinating, going from rivals to partners and vice-versa.
I'm particularly interested in the Marconi _ E.M.I. relationship, these ended up as GEC-Marconi and Thorn-EMI, as I understand bitter rivals in the Avionics industry (when we had one).
Fascinating stuff,
Rob.
