Sony TV-112UM Multi-Standard

The TV dates back to the early 1970s. It is in excellent condition. It was probably last turned on 20 years ago. Today, I dusted it off and decided to turn it on. It works without any problems. Only the volume potentiometer crackles a little. All four systems generate a good, stable image. The TV was designed for Western countries, Belgium, and France. It works in the following standards:
CCIR - known
819F - known
625B - regional; early VHF system; CCIR C; used in Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, discontinued in 1977; modulation AM, positive, sound +5.5 MHz
625F - regional; CCIR L; used in France, Luxembourg; start 1963, discontinued in 2011; modulation AM, positive, sound - 6.5 MHz

Can it do the Belgian version of 819? That's the one where an 819 signal was crammed into a 625 size channel with resulting loss of resolution.

That it still works so well after 20 years off and being made in the 70's is surprising but it is a Sony. We used to buy their TV's but changed to Panasonic which are equally reliable.

Yes, the Belgian system is undoubtedly a nod to France. I believe the geopolitical situation at the time was the main driving force behind the creation of an "optimal" system. It was a time of testing one's strength on the international stage. Technical aspects, it seems, were of secondary importance.

The quality of the receiver is truly amazing. I have my own theory about this. Small Sony receivers were used in monitoring systems together with cameras. These were professional applications. This required high-quality components and design work.

Yes, years ago Sony was good. Now they've given up. TCL will put a Sony badge on some of theirs. TCL always made Alcatel mobiles and make their own panels including QLED (which are LCD, blue backlight and red and green "quantum" dots).

Sony professional gear was their last good stuff.

Belgium and the desire there to receive Dutch, French, Belgium and German TV (and they have loads of languages) spawned Barco Multistandard sets in 1949 which were amazing in late 1970s when I encountered them. Barco seem to predate TV.

I think Panasonic TVs were replaced by a Turkish brand with a Black Diamond Logo. The Irish Management continued to import those, buut branded Walker when Panasonic closed the Dublin Office.

Philips TV & AV are also just labels now on Asian companies. Philips has reverted to pre-1928 – Lamps.

& the Belgian AM sound systems used pre-emphasis & the French systems didn't, so another complication. My parents had a Sony KV1800 since 1972 till at least 1994 when my sister had it, & it never conked out ...

I wish we could be complimentary about the Sony professional monitors (CRT based, we don't have many professional flat panel ones yet of any make) we have at the Broadcast Engineering Museum. Maybe that's as they get older but reliability isn't their strong suit. We like JVC monitors - they usually just work, even if they've been stored badly.

Being a Belgian company, it's not surprising that Barco were good at multistandard sets. They made some good professional monitors too, though they are getting quite old.

I took a couple of Barco professional monitors to the dump 5 or 6 years ago during a shed clearance.
