Broadcast Engineering Museum open days September 2024

The Broadcast Engineering Museum will open on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, 11am to 4pm, as part of Heritage Open days. Since our May opening we have new displays, including a lighting exhibit and a production gallery.

We have also just published a new edition of our newsletter. If you would like to be on our mailing list please drop me a note with your email address. Line-Up 9 includes features on the Philips PM5544 electronic testcard and items we have received from the estate of the late Lucien Nunes Vaz. The attached photo is the Eidophor TV projector that Lucien rescued from the Leicester Square Odeon and is now on display at the Broadcast Engineering Museum. I wonder if it will ever be possible to restore it to working order.

A couple of photos from our open days last weekend. We were busy - over 100 visitors on each day. One photo shows Ruth at reception, dealing with the queue. The other shows our satellite truck and radio car about an hour before the crowds arrived on Saturday.

Next open days will probably be in May and September 2025. We'd like to find a way to open more frequently but if you're going to be up our way then please get in touch as we may be able to give you a private visit.

We'll avoid the clash with Biggleswade in future. Jeremy has kindly published definite future dates for BVWS events. The problem was the the BVWS changed the date of the Biggleswade meeting after our dates were set in stone.

Tracy and Steve, thank you. I hope that both of you will be able to visit the museum one day.

Our next open weekend in 2025 is likely to be either 17/18 or 24/25 May. Carefully timed to avoid Retrotech. Our September opening will be on whichever of the Heritage Open Day weekends avoids Biggleswade which is on the 14th. We are working out how to open more often. A major limitation is the number of stewards needed, volunteers, especially local -ish, would be very welcome. We are thinking about reduced scale open days with admission by pre-booked guided tours only. This reduces the number of stewards needed.
