In 1937 a twin-axial cable was laid around London, terminating at Alexandra Palace. This allowed outside broadcasts to be done from various locations. The first of these was the coronation of George VI.
There are scenes of the cable being testing and pulled-in in the famous film "Television Comes to London". I've taken a screenshot of the scene where they are greasing the cable to ease its path into the ducts.
Thanks to Gordon Lean, the retired head of BBC Transmitter Capital Projects, the BECG now has a piece of that cable. I colelcted it yesterday. We need to tidy up the exposed end so can actually see the inner cores.
We will have it on display at our open days on 25/26 May: https://becg.org.uk/events/
