My Bright Green Lamp Limiter

I used my new lamp limiter box today for the first time.

I built it over a year ago.

It is blessed with a moving iron voltmeter and a moving iron ammeter.

Trouble is I can't remember if the ammeter shows half or twice the real current since it's calibrated for use with a current transformer.

It looks quite impressive in its bright green plastic biscuit "tin".

I have laid in a stock of incandescent golf ball size light bulbs for my lamp limiter.  LED may be cheaper to run and give more light but they are useless for this purpose.

My lamp limiter has oddly assorted shaped bulbs. I think they are 40W, 60W and 100W, to be switched in as needed. They are unlikely to fail for electrical reasons; much more likely to get whacked accidentally.

I have avoided smashing my bulbs by putting them in an open ended tin can so that I can see the end only.

I like the green colour idea, perhaps I will colour in my various instruments reflecting their use. So much more fun than dull black. I have a green mustimeter already and lots of paint for models.

I thought I'd posted about the 500W lamp limiter I used when I was fixing fruit machine power supplies some years ago but the post seems to have disappeared.

The only reason the lamp limiter is green is because the biscuit "tin" is made from green plastic: safe & easy to cut.

The lamp inside is a 100W halogen lamp & holder repurposed from a defunct security light.

There's also a 1A trip.

I have (secreted away from the H&S lot although it is safe) a fan heater* based "lamp limiter" for working on our large power supplies. It is an extension lead with two (single) sockets in series, very useful,.
*or anything else with a 13A plug on it.

I've used a 2 bar electric fire as a limiter in the distant past. Can't remember what for. 2 different settings!

I've also used a lamp limiter in an HT feed while diagnosing line timebase problems. For transistorised timebases - valves can take the short term overload.

Used for the first the other day to run up something out of the garage.

It worked! :D
