The EHT transformer in my HMV 902 failed two years ago, that was the second transformer to go faulty since I acquired the set in the late eighties. Mike Barker rewound a spare HMV 900 transformer for me and it arrived two weeks ago and what a magnificent rewind job it is. But I've got second thoughts about fitting the new transformer in this set. The reason being is that the power supply unit is not the original EMI unit. All the dimensions of the chassis are incorrect, so much so I'm considering having a new chassis made.
For starters a safety issue, it is not possible to fit a box to contain the EHT transformer and rectifier valve. Secondly, the position of the receiver and timebases mains transformer should be turned 90 degrees. Thirdly, the position of the HT rectifier valve is incorrect, one of the reasons why an EHT box cannot be used.
The best plan is fit the new transformer in one my other first generation TV sets, the 900 would be the best choice as there is no need to remove the CRT.
