Can anyone recommend a cleaner and belt/pulley anti-slip medium (is anyone there?) after I've enthusiastically contaminated them with oil etc. Also would it work for contaminated radio dial cord?. Cheers.

Detergent and water if it's safe and reasonable to give the affected parts a good scrub and/or dunking.

IPA (Isopropyl alchohol) not the beer

If you've got anything with silicone on the affected parts I wish you luck. Remarkably hard to shift all traces of silicones.

You could try IPA (no not beer)

Dial cord also possible particularly if it is off. If not have a go with cotton buds.

But dial cords, drive spindle and the drum work best if greased with silicone grease or Vaseline AKA Petroleum jelly if the tension is correct. Make sure no rust or dirt on the spindle drive. The cord should have 2.5 to 3.5 turns on it according to service info and has to continuously slip on the spindle or it will move out of the groove. Make sure the tuning capacitor isn't stuff, but when oiling bearings (the grease can set) don't get anything into the vanes (stator or rotor) or the capacitance goes off!

Personally I would not use silicon grease or Vaseline they are too soft and slippery. I use the type of wax you get on old capacitors.

That is essentially simply a denser fractionation. That's also paraffin wax. You can melt pure paraffin wax candles in Petroleum Jelly B.P. and that's exactly what you get.

Or Bees wax is also very good, just rub it over the cord.
