Hi Just read on the Daily Mail that energy prices are going to rise again as there has been a fire at a power facility in Kent which links the UK to France power grid . The UK gets spanked again making up excuses as they said gas priced are going up as well bet you bottom dollar that France dont put up there prices and are better prepared kind regards Bob

Well, the UK is a net importer of electricity so no reason for France to put up its prices, they already have more than they need. But if we are maxed-out, one way to reduce demand is put up prices to encourage people to switch off a few things, else we'll be in trouble!

Buy a load of batteries then Bob, charge them at night and use them at peak times.

Hi Trevor do what the motor home people do decent 12v solar panel with controller use the same batteries as what is in portable traffic lights as they are high capacity for there size use led lighting run a sine wave inverter for 240v modern LPG heater one of my friends has been living off grid for years and loves it Bobs yr uncle Fannys your aunt kind regards Bob

This gives real time information on our power consumption, and sources. There is a section on Interconnectors with various EU countries. They are either positive, when we are consuming power, or negative when we are supplying power.

That site takes data from the various real time sources, and parses it into a user friendly format. It is worth noting that just now wind is supplying as much power as nuclear (5GW each). Solar is zero because it is dark at 2am. There are apparently two French interconnectors, rated at 2GW and 1GW. The media are silent about which of these is down. But since the site above shows a power flow to us of 1GW from France, it looks like it is just the 2GW link that is down. But the Belgian and Dutch interconnectors seem to be near to maximum to take up the slack from the fault one of the French lines.

Hi Craig interesting site your link . EDF out of 14 nuclear reactors they own 5 are offline & Harlepool which is not far from me both reactors are down 1 for gas turbine issues and no 2 for it has manually tripped for a steam leak . The UK now should start to invest more in to the National Grid Capacity to be self sufficient & not rely on the EU

That is why we should be investing in the supply to the Grid & wind & solar power is not the solution alone . what we put in land fill should be processed and made in to fuel that can be burned cleanly and exhausted through filtered catalyst chimney & this solves the issue of pollution of land fill kind regards Bob

If you think buying land based energy is expensive and beyond your control, I can tell you from 30 years experience that living off grid with solar and diesel power generation and propane for cooking is far more expensive long term.

A 13kg propane  has gone from £27.10 to £38.50 in 4 months.
Solar is not free, its capital and maintenance heavy. No good for 5 months a year.
Diesel engines are expensive to maintain and replace, the red diesel fuel has gone from 53p/ltr before tax to 90p in 3 months.
